Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6) by Ilona Andrews

“Are you afraid?” He asked.
“Nope. Your funeral. Ready?”
He spread his arms. “Introduce me to the afterlife.”
I thought you’d never ask.

The blurb…

Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

My Thoughts …

Dear authors Ilona and Gordon:

Really …

Now … the review …

The characters:

Kate Daniels: Sword master extraordinaire, kick-ass fighter, stubborn witty girl with a problem with authority and loyal to the core, if you have her by your side, she’ll back you up with all she has. 26 years old (I think … or was it 25??) Ohhh and she is Roland’s daughter AND Curran’s Consort.

Curran: The Beast Lord, alpha of Atlanta’s Shapeshifter Pack. He’s dangerous, sexy, strong and turns into a giant gray lion. He’s 32 and he will do ANYTHING to protect Kate and his people.  He has some stalkerish tendencies and likes things made his way, but he’s fair and loyal. You don’t want to hear him roar.

Hugh d’Ambray: Roland’s warlord and preceptor of the Order of Iron Dogs (Roland’s Elite warriors). He was trained by Voron, Kate’s adoptive father and previous warlord. He’s dark, sexy, strong and merciless. He’s a very good swordmaster and fighter, he also posses magic words.

Lorelei Wilson: I hate her so much I won’t even describe her. How dare she??? Curran is mine Kate’s!! … OK … OK … breathe … Lorelei’s father is the alpha of Alaska’s Pack, she’s 21 years old and she wants to be an alpha, so she is determined to replace Kate.

The Plot:

Kate, His Furrines (That’s Curran, you know right?) and company go to Europe to do a bodyguard job and protect a pregnant werewolf. It’s obviously a trap, and they know it, but they need the panacea (a medicine to stop kids from going loop). Kate calls in a favor that Saiman owed her, and get everybody on board a ship and sail to an island to do the job. Things get complicated when the host (owner of the castle in the island where the shapeshifter packs are staying) turns out to be more than a simple human, then some weird creature tries to kill the pregnant werewolf and a st*upid b*tch wants to wrap her hideous paws around Curran’s heart.

Yeah! I’m talking to you Lorelei!

The book was an emotional roller coaster, my feelings were a mess from 40-80% of the book…

We have non-stop action, evil creatures, mystery and tension …  we see Kate pushed to her limits, phisically and emotionally …

All my feelings were Kate’s feelings, I was sad and broken hearted with her!! I shared her pain and tears, I felt her isolation and loneliness. I wanted to scream with her!!

“I’m used to watching for people with swords,” I told him. “I never saw the knife. You were too close.”
“Kate, I didn’t stab you.”
“Are you sure? Because it still hurts.”

And then I recovered just to fall again at 90% and I almost wake up hubby at 2am to cry in his shoulder, I couldn’t believe it!!! I knew from other reviewers lucky enough to get an ARC that a character died, so I had my suspicions … and I was fearful for two of them … surely Ilona and Gordon wouldn’t kill one of my fav characters … well … they did … because they not just killed a character, they SPOILER (highlight to read) crippled SPOILER a couple other characters too.

Curran … dear Curran … I’m quoting  P!nk when I tell you:

Ohh yes, here are the song’s lyrics

Sometimes I hate every single stupid word you say
Sometimes I wanna slap you in your whole face
(Like in the 2nd half of the book)
There’s no one quite like you, you push all my buttons down
I know life would suck without you
At the same time, I wanna hug you
I wanna wrap my hands around your neck
(And strangle you Curran!!!)
You’re an asshole but I love you

Why Curran?? WHY!!!??? Deep down I always had faith in him, and I knew he MUST have had a hidden agenda … but … argh!!!!

And Hugh … such a hot crazy maniac!!! He was exactly as I thought he would be: dark sexy and tempting.

“When I realized I’d stopped aging, I went for it. Let me tell you, no matter how creative you get – and I got creative – the mechanics of sex are always the same. The difference is passion. Passion makes it special. Having sex with an attractive woman is fun, but add passion, make her that one woman that you love or hate, and the whole experience changes. You feel something for me, Kate. Whether you want to admit it or not, something is there. I can guarantee we would never grow tired of it.”

Hotness factor: Just one sex scene, nothing too graphic. We need more of Curran’s hotness!!!!!

Unpredictable factor:  There are a couple of things you see coming, but there are also MANY surprises and twists in the plot that will leave you staring at the book and saying “WTF just happened???”.

Veredict: I love Kate Daniels series!!! It’s impossible to get bored in any of the books, they just keep getting better and better. This is exactly how an UF should be. Now … to wait another year for the next one … I want an SPOILER (Highlight to read) AMAZING WEDDING!!!!! SPOILER.

I have only one question, and it’s sort of a spoiler … highlight to read …

If Saiman was impersonating Lorelei … I’m thinking … the shifters should have identified him by his smell … right??? How come nobody knew he was a fake Lorelei??

Mhhh just a wish upon a star … Ilona and Gordon if you ever read this …
Can we please have Curran’s POV when he thought Kate was dead?
Scratch that … any POV from him in this book would be amazing!!!
Pretty please!!!!

Rating: 5 AMAZING STARS!!!

The Blurb…

There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twenty-something, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts.

Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric producer for an upcoming webcast on ghost hunters. Even though the show’s budget is non-existent and Dex himself is a maddening enigma, Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance. Her uncle’s haunted lighthouse provides the perfect catalyst and backdrop for a mystery that unravels the threads of Perry’s fragile sanity and causes her to fall for a man, who, like the most dangerous of ghosts, may not be all that he seems.

My thoughts…
I’m writing this review after reading every single book from the series Experiment in Terror … ok not every single one, today I’m finishing Old Blood novella. Anyway … I’m using this review as a review for the series … so I’m giving 5 stars, altough this book deserves 3 😛

If you are thinking in getting into the series, let me tell you that after 6 books … the story about Dex and Perry keeps getting better and better.

I’ve always had a fascination for horror films. When I was a kid, and my friends went to my house for sleepovers, we always watched scary movies with the light off and some candles, just to feed the creepy atmosphere. Later, I grew up and the horror movies in the market became more gore than good old horror, so I quit watching that stuff. Also, growing up I lost my guts and honestly … now I have a chicken heart … yep, I’m easy to scare. That’s why at the beginning I had my doubts about reading this book.

Well, I shouldn’t have worried. It’s scary, yes, but not super mega scary. I can handle it… as long as my imagination doesn’t play games with me at night (you know, the funny sounds, shadows, etc etc).

Experiment in Terror has everything you can ask for in a series:

-Suspense and action.
-Chemistry and banter between the main characters.
-Romance: slow built and I like it that way.
-Flawed complex characters.
-Great soundtrack: Mhhhhh ok not exactly but the music choices the author mentioned in the books are very good 😀
-A couple of cliffhangers.
-Unpredictability, not everything is crystal clear.
-A great male POV: I hate it when some female authors use a male POV and the guy seems like a girl on testosterone or a guy in estrogen …. in The Dex-Files and And With Madness Comes the Light Dex is perfectly characterized as the beautiful flawed vicious douche son of a bitch that he is … *swoons*
-Smexy time.
-Support characters: Ada, Max, Rebecca, Bird, Pippa, Perry’s parents … I like the others characters. And is nice to see other great female characters in the series, aside from the MC (In some series only the MC is a strong female, the rest are a bunch of sluts …. not in this one 😀 ). Rebecca and Ada play an important role.
-Keeps getting better and better, every book is better or equal to the last.
-And the most important thing … EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE BOOKS IS A PAGE TURNER.SO, I say you give it a chance.

My Rating…
